According to Oregon Geographic Names, 6th Edition, by Lewis L. McArthur, p. 665: Petersburg was named for Peter Strohler, a homesteader of 1900, and established as a station of the Great Southern Railroad along Fifteenmile Creek in 1905. When the railroad was removed in the 1930s, the population of Petersburg diminished but the name was retained by Petersburg School.
