According to Oregon Geographic Names, 6th Edition, by Lewis L. McArthur, p. 780:

Smock and Smock Prairie were named for the Smock family and existed long before the nearby community of Wamic where the school now stands. The postoffice was established Oct. 28, 1899 and closed May 31, 1909. Elizabeth Ledford was the first postmaster.
